Meat Quality
As the pork industry moves toward meeting consumers’ pork-quality demands, NSR has responded by developing the Pork Quality Alliance to identify breeds and lines that excel in pork quality. Pork Quality Alliance is built on the foundation of an expansive database of pork-quality measurements already taken from large cooperative meat-quality tests with National Pork Board, the National Barrow Show® and other university and private-sector testing. The expanded evaluation includes ongoing sire line research at the farm level. These pork-quality measurements are then included in the STAGES genetic evaluation program, and EPDs for the traits are calculated. These genetic-prediction tools can be used by breeders and commercial producers alike as they meet the demands of the packers and consumers.
