GENERAL SHOW INFORMATION

Thank you for submitting entries for the 2020 Summer Type Conference open show and sale. With over 4,000 total entries submitted for the junior and open shows, we are once again expecting record numbers. Space limitations will require gilts to be penned two head per pen while boars will still be penned separately. Adjustments regarding pen space and location may be made. We are confident we can accommodate all exhibitors with your cooperation.

BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE SHOW, PLEASE REMEMBER!

  1. Please double check CVIs (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) to ensure all information is accurate and all requirements are met. ALL CVIs MUST BE ISSUED ON OR AFTER MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2020.  
    1. MAKE SURE ANIMALS MEET ALL TEST REQUIREMENTS (BRUCELLOSIS REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED)
    2. It is best to provide your veterinarian with a copy of the included Summer Type Conference health requirements and check to ensure each requirement is included on the CVI.
    3. ALL animals entering the Iowa State Fairgrounds MUST be listed on an official, interstate health certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) issued by a licensed, accredited veterinarian.
    4. Loads containing swine that do not meet all health requirements will not be admitted to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. NO DELIVERY ANIMALS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS!
    5. A complete list of up-to-date health regulations are included in this letter.
  2. ALL animals must be tagged with an official, permanently-numbered, federally-approved ear tag.

  3. Please contact Whitney Hendricks whitneyh@nationalswine.com  or 765.463.3594, ext. 112 with ear notches and registration numbers of your purebred open show entries by Tuesday, June 30. 
    1. This information is used by NSR staff to create pen display cards for open show animals.
    2. Open show crossbred boar and gilt exhibitors: Please complete crossbred check-in form by May 30  by visiting the link below: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1R2oQqTMprBD5owIoIb0n4nLrvdEweB8M1n0Aiq28TZY/viewform
  4. Crossbred boars are required to be DNA stress tested. (Crossbred gilts are NOT required to be stress tested)
    1. Please bring your documented crossbred boar stress test results with you to present during check-in. 
    2. The stress status of each crossbred boar will be listed in the show and sale catalog.
    3. For information on stress test procedures for crossbred boars, contact Whitney Webb, whitney@nationalswine.com.
    4. Purebred NSR entries are not required to be stress tested prior to exhibition.
  5. Please make sure all purebred entries meet their respective breed eligibility standards.
    1. In particular, make sure all NSR purebred boars and gilts possess six functional teats on each side.
  6. Bedding will be NOT be provided; shavings will be available for purchase.

UPON ARRIVAL: UNLOADING TIMES, CVI & ANIMAL INSPECTION, PENNING, TRAILER PARKING

  1. There will be cutoff times for entry arrival on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening for vet inspection. Please plan accordingly to arrive during the posted times below.
    1. MONDAY, JULY 6 (enter through Gate 2 on North side of fairgrounds off of University Ave.)
      • 8 p.m.: Entry arrival will be closed for the evening (all junior entries MUST be on grounds by 8 p.m.)
    2. TUESDAY, JULY 7 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • 10:00 a.m. – 7 p.m.: Open show entries may arrive
    3. WEDNESDAY, JULY 8 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • Noon- -7 p.m.: Open show entries may arrive
    4. THURSDAY, JULY 9 (enter through Gate 8 on South side of fairgrounds off of Dean Ave.)
      • 6 a.m.-Noon: Open show entries may arrive
      • All open show entries must be on grounds by Noon.
  2. Upon entering the Iowa State Fairgrounds, the official show veterinarian will inspect animals and original CVIs.
    1. Please have animals’ ORIGINAL CVIs and test chart results ready for inspection upon arriving.
    2. Only original CVIs will be approved by inspectors.
    3. No animals are allowed to be unloaded prior to inspection.
  3. Pens will be pre-assigned to all open show exhibitors.
    1. Please pen entries in your designated pens and be sure to pen two gilts in each pen. (Boars will receive individual pens.) Due to space limitations, tack pens will not be available.
    2. Pen dimensions vary in size (6’ x 6’) and (5’ x 6’).
    3. If your plans have changed and you are not bringing entries, please contact whitneyh@nationalswine.com .
  4. ALL Trailers will be parked in the North lot located north of the infield.
    1. After unloading, exit the fairgrounds and travel East on Dean Avenue to the campground gate. Please follow signs to the parking lot area.
    2. DO NOT PARK IN THE CAMPGROUND!
    3. THERE WILL BE NO DELIVERY OPTIONS AT THE 2020 Summer Type Conference. IF YOU HAVE DELIVERIES, YOU MUST MAKE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS OFF OF THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS!!!

CHECK-IN FOR THE EXPOSITION OPEN SHOW

  1. NSR exhibitors are required to go through open show check-in during the posted times below.
    1. THURSDAY, JULY 9 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Open Show Registration (swine barn NSR office)
  2. Items needed for check-in:
    1. Original CVIs:
      1. Please bring original CVI that has been approved by health officials.
      2. Exhibitors will need to submit original CVIs for each open show animal.
      3. Copies of the original CVIs can be made in the check-in line.
    2. Stress Test Results (crossbred boars only):
    3. Crossbred boar exhibitors must present a documented stress test result during check-in.
    4. Stress status of crossbred boars will be listed in the show and sale catalogs.
  3. A lot number will be assigned to each animal entered in the Summer Type Conference.
    1. Please know lot number of each boar and gilt prior to bringing animals to scales for weighing.
    2. Lot numbers will be painted on the animal by exhibitors. Paint brands will be provided by show staff.
    3. Please paint dark colored animals (Durocs, Hampshires and dark crossbreds) with provided yellow paint.
    4. Please paint light colored animals (Landrace, Yorkshires and light crossbreds) with provided green paint.
    5. ALL animals must have legible paint numbers prior to the open show and sale for identification.
    6. Please return paint brand numbers to table outside open show office, once finished using them.
  4. NSR Purebred and Crossbred boars will be weighed on Thursday, July 9 from 2-4 p.m. There will be no scanning. Purebred boars will be shown by age, but will still be weighed.
    1. Please go through the check-in line and have your animals’ lot number prior to bringing them to the scales.
    2. Crossbred Gilts must turn in a declared weight. If exhibiting a double-entered gilt in the junior and open shows, the junior show declared weight must be used.

HEALTH REGULATIONS

ATTENTION: With heightened awareness and concerns with Foreign Animal Diseases (FADs), specifically African Swine Fever (ASF), it is critical to follow all health requirements below and that veterinarians and exhibitors take extra precaution to insure the health of their animals.

If show staff or state officials identify animals that may have health concerns during unloading or while at the show, action may be taken, not limited to quarantine, or sending animals home.

  1. EACH ANIMAL ENTERING THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS MUST BE LISTED ON AN OFFICIAL, INTERSTATE CERTIFICATE OF VETERINARY INSPECTION (CVI) ISSUED BY A LICENSED, ACCREDITED VETERINARIAN. THIS INCLUDES DELIVERY ANIMALS. LOADS CONTAINING SWINE WITHOUT ALL BELOW MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE GRANTED ACCESS TO THE IOWA STATE FAIRGROUNDS.
    1. All animals and original CVIs will be inspected by show veterinarian and show staff prior to unloading.
    2. Multiple animals may be listed on one original CVI. Photocopies of CVIs can be made during show check-in for each animal after the show veterinarian has approved CVIs upon arrival.
    3. An accredited veterinarian must inspect animals and issue a certificate of veterinary inspection on or after Monday, June 29th, 2020.
    4. A permit number is not required from the Iowa state veterinarian’s office to move animals into The Exposition.
  2. CVIs MUST BE ISSUED ON OR AFTER MONDAY, JUNE 29th, 2020 WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
    1. Name and 911 address of consignor (location of swine); consigned to National Junior Show or Summer Type Conference, Iowa State Fairgrounds, East 30th Street and University Ave., Des Moines, Iowa, 50317.
    2. ALL SWINE being exhibited at The National Junior Show or Summer Type Conference MUST be officially identified with an official, federally approved ear tag. The animal’s ear tag ID MUST be listed on CVI. 840 ear tags are preferred. For more information on federally recognized ear tags, visit http://www.nationalswine.com/events/ear-tags.php. If your animal does not have an official ID tag, they will not be granted access to the National Junior Show or Summer Type Conference.  
    3. Each animal shall be individually identified by ear notch and ear notch MUST be listed on CVI.
    4. Health status of animal, including dates of required tests and vaccinations must be listed.
    5. A premise ID number MUST be included on CVI.
    6. The cell phone number of your veterinarian who issued the CVI MUST be included on the CVI.
    7. ALL CVIs MUST CARRY THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS – “Farm or origin of swine”:
      1. Has not had pseudorabies or swine dysentery in the last 12 months
      2. Has not had any clinical signs or diagnosis of TGE or PEDv in the last 60 days
      3. Feeds no raw garbage and uses no PRV vaccine
      4. Is not under quarantine for any disease condition
      5. Has not had vesicular stomatitis diagnosed within 10 miles of farm or origin in the last 30 days
  3. REQUIRED TESTS AND VACCINATIONS
    1. PSEUDORABIES (PRV) TESTING:
      1. ALL ANIMALS MUST be individually tested for PRV on or after Monday, June 15, 2020.
        1. All official identification of animal (sex, ear tag and ear notch) needs to be included on the pseudorabies test chart.
        2. Animals must test PRV-negative with all results on the dated CVI.
        3. The official PRV test chart must be provided along with your CVI.
        4. Either the ELISA (gB ELISA), ALA or S/N tests are acceptable. Differentiable ELISA (g1 ELISA) test will NOT be accepted. 
        5. (Even if animals originate from a pseudorabies class-free state or PRV-qualified herd, each animal MUST be individually tested for pseudorabies. However, brucellosis testing requirements, as detailed below, are different.)
    2. BRUCELLOSIS TESTING:
      1. All animals must be individually tested for brucellosis on or after Monday, June 15, 2020 UNLESS:
        1. Animals originate from a validated brucellosis free herd
          1. If the herd of origin is brucellosis validated, the validation numbers must appear on the CVI and the most recent quarterly herd test date (month, day and year) must be stated on the CVI.
    3. VACCINATIONS:
      1. All breeding swine coming to the show MUST be vaccinated against leptospirosis (6-way) including bratislava and erysipelas.
        1. The complete date of vaccination MUST be listed on the health certificate. Market animals should not be vaccinated.
      2.  It is required that all breeding animals are vaccinated against swine influenza. The vaccination date should be included on the CVI.
  • In some instances, these requirements are in addition to the state of Iowa regulations. However, they are necessary in meeting other state requirements for purchasers of open show animals through sales as animals are reconsigned to new destinations.
