Markets go through peaks and valleys, economies experience all-time highs and all-time lows, trends change and the world keeps moving. For Moyer Genetic Edge, 10 years is the transformation from buying a boar to use on their own sow herd to being one of the most reputable boar studs in the showpig industry. In 2008, the Moyer family attended the Indiana State Fair Crossbred Classic. Lane Farms, Indiana, drove their very popular Trouble Shooter x Super 7 entry to Reserve Champion Crossbred Boar honors. The Moyer crew was very confi dent this boar could do big things within their own sow herd and partnered with Scott Stauffer, Ohio, to purchase him for $70,000. The boar was brought back to Ohio, named Big Shot and in conjunction to being used on both Moyer’s and Stauffer’s sows, several doses of Big Shot semen were sold. Fast forward to the fall of 2009 and the Moyer family had raised approximately eight sons of Big Shot, plus purchased a few boars from respected breeders. The fi rst Moyer Genetic Edge boar catalog was hot off the press and the boar stud was offi cially established. Currently, this Ohio fi rm houses 35 boars and 120 sows in their two facilities. Moyer Genetic Edge is owned by Tom, Andrew and Ben Moyer. These three plus four full-time employees manage the day-to-day operations. The crew keeps their schedules busy with collecting every Monday and Thursday, breeding and farrowing year round, selling pigs at numerous online and live sales and traveling to scout out potential boar purchases. Ben has also had several opportunities to judge both junior and open shows including the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Oklahoma Youth Expo, World Pork Expo, National Junior Summer Spectacular, Indiana State Fair Crossbred Classic and NSR Summer Type Conference. Their dominate Yorkshire and crossbred genetics can be seen in pedigrees across the country. Their constant success can be contributed to staying committed to their priorities. “We continue to purchase boars to use in our herd and to offer our customers,” Ben said. “Our success at selecting unique breeding boars has been one of our strong points. We pride ourselves in taking care of our customers like we want to be taken care of and offering genetics that help our customers reach their goals.”Anyone who has been in the showpig industry for more than fi ve minutes can tell you that it is a fast-paced environment and what is “in” one moment can be “out” by the next show season. With that being said, it is a wonder how boar studs like Moyer Genetic Edge continue to provide genetics that go out and produce Big Shot was purchased from Lane Farms, Indiana, at the 2008 Indiana State Fair Crossbred Classic, for $70,000. He is credited for starting the boar stud at Moyer Genetic Edge and sired several key boars for the stud including Big Stick. AUGUST 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE2618 Aug SE Form.indd 267/26/2018 3:07:43 PMchampions year after year. And better yet, how once those Moyer-bred gilts end their show career they become sows and out produce themselves.“We continue to focus on genetics that will advance our herd and in turn help our customers be successful,” Ben said. “We also don’t compare ourselves to others. We focus on our program and how we can best serve our valued customers to the best of our ability.”Each year Moyer Genetic Edge adds boars to their lineup. Their purchasing decisions are based off three key factors. First, the Moyer crew studies the pedigree. They look for proven genetics from proven fi rms whose hogs go out, win and work. Next, an extra dose of emphasis is placed on the sow family backing potential boar purchases. If a boar is backed by successful sows with impactful and prestigious track records, then that boar gets a check mark. The third factor is phenotypic evaluation. “We like stout featured boars that have the reaching power to move us and our customers in certain areas,” Ben explained. In the history of Moyer Genetic Edge’s boar battery, there are a handful of sires who did their part in putting this stud on the map. The boar stud was started with Big Shot. He went on to sire Big Stick who then sired the Champion Barrow at the 2010 and 2011 Ohio State Fair. Big Stick had a major impact on Moyer Genetic Edge and is the favorite boar the fi rm has raised to date. In 2012, Steve Sell, Iowa, had a Hillbilly Bone x Toxic 23-5 son that was named Champion Crossbred Boar at the World Pork Expo. Moyer Genetic Edge, Reynolds Farms and Rohrs Showpigs partnered and purchased Monumental for $180,000. As Ben stated, Monumental would go on to sire champions for anyone and everyone who used him. The all time world-record-selling boar, Sky’s the Limit, also ranks toward the top of Moyer’s infl uential-boars list. Moyer Genetic Edge and Upperhand Genetics, Indiana, teamed up at the 2013 NSR Fall Classic to purchase this Big Affair son from WD Swine Farms, California. On the Yorkshire side of things, Final Drive was bred by Steve Cobb and Family, Arkansas, and purchased by the Moyer crew. Final Drive was a son of Final Move back on a Vintage sow. He made his mark by making signifi cant and positive changes in the Yorkshire breed. In 2014, the Hoge family, Illinois, set a new Yorkshire record when they sold their Out of Control x Drive By boar for $270,000 at the NSR Summer Type Conference. Moyer Genetic Edge purchased In Control with Reynolds Farms, Ohio, and he continues to be prevalent in winning genetics for the Yorkshire breed. If you study the Sires and Retired Sires sections on geneticedge.com, you will see how these boars have infl uenced not only the Moyer Genetic Edge program, but the showpig industry as a whole. With so many impactful boars it is diffi cult for the Moyer crew to name just one memorable moment. They were able to narrow it down to the moments that both Monumental and In Control were purchased. “Seeing the impact that Monumental and In Control have had and continue to have on crossbreds and the Yorkshire breed is incredibly memorable,” Ben said.Moyer Genetic Edge markets their livestock through numerous sales throughout the year targeting all show seasons. They also offer bred females twice a year. To market their livestock, the fi rm utilizes print advertisements in the Seedstock EDGE, as well as social media. Moyer Genetic Edge has two primary locations in Wauseon, Ohio where they house their 35 boars and 120 sows. They focus on providing genetics to positively impact the crossbred and Yorkshire breeds. “Continuing to keep top genetics available for the public is a challenge. We do our homework. Breeders need to buy females from proven fi rms that have a story, match them with the boars they need to be taken to and stay with it.” – Ben Moyer27AUGUST 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 Aug SE Form.indd 277/26/2018 3:07:43 PMWith the show ring constantly changing, it would be easy to jump on each bandwagon. Tom, Andrew and Ben work hard to stay the course and remain at the top of the industry. When asked where they see the showpig industry heading, Ben explained the importance of breeders being very selective and to strive to make good livestock for young people to be competitive. Tom, Andrew and Ben don’t sugar coat the challenges of owning a boar stud.“It is not as easy as it looks on Facebook,” Ben explained. “Continuing to keep top genetics available for the public is a challenge. We do our homework. Breeders need to buy females from proven fi rms that have a story, match them with the boars they need to be taken to and stay with it.”Everyone agrees the most rewarding aspect of the boar stud is when customers tell them about success they have had with Moyer Genetic Edge sires. Moyer Genetic Edge has a few mottos they live by. The fi rst being “Stay true to your beliefs and go with your gut on the big decisions.” The second is a saying that Andrew regularly reminds everyone of, “It is never as good or as bad as you think it is.” These life mantras, plus working hard, staying true to their priorities and treading a steady course has allowed the Moyer family and their customers to not only experience great success in the ring, but produce genetics that live on for generations. Long story short, Moyer Genetic Edge has been making an impact for 10 years, and will continue infl uencing the industry for 10 years and counting. Big Stick was a son of Big Shot and an Alias 106-3 sow. He was farrowed on the Moyer farm and went on to sire the Champion Barrow at the Ohio State Fair in both 2010 and 2011.Each year Moyer Genetic Edge offers showpig prospects to junior members across the country. They use to host live sales at their Ohio facility, but today they primarily market pigs through online sales, in conjunction with live sales in the Southwest region of the country. Two recent wins for Moyer Genetic Edge include the Champion Overall and Champion Yorkshire Gilt at the 2017 World Pork Expo. She is sired by RIY5 Capital Gain 72-1 and was shown by Jacie Cantrell (left), Oklahoma. Savannah Page (right), Georgia, drove her ACGF6 News Flash 65-3 x CDNO4 In Control 3-7 gilt to Reserve Champion Overall and Champion Yorkshire Gilt honors at the 2018 NJSA Southeast Regional.
