It’s a bond that says your breeding stock is a superior product, backed by quality genetics and predictable performance. So, after a sale, ensure that you continue that bond with your customers. Transfer your pedigrees in a timely manner. Not only does it record a history of official ownership, but it guarantees customer satisfaction and just might set the tone for repeat business. What is your professional background?I fi rst started working for the U.S. Pork Center of Excellence, which is an organization that is supported by the National Pork Board. While there, I did communications and program development. I then went to Iowa Corn and did communications and leadership development as the communications manager. I was at Dupont Pioneer for just a little bit and worked on educational components for training their staff on the production side. I have been at National Pork Board for the last fi ve years and I am now the director of communications. Growing up, what career did you imagine yourself in?Growing up I really wanted to be a veterinarian, but my fi rst day of Animal Science 114 I realized I might not be able to meet all of the requirements to be a vet. I then really focused on agricultural communications with an emphasis in animal science to be able to work communications for commodity organizations. What are your responsibilities with National Pork Board?I’m responsible for building the reputation of pork producers in the consumer space through digital and in-person events. I manage our farm tour program, which is where we take social media infl uencers to farms and show them modern pork production. I also manage the Real Pig Farming campaign and content distribution, as well as our Pork Checkoff social media channels. Additionally, I get to do some writing and organize various events. What is a normal day for you?Oh, there isn’t really a normal day. My days and weeks are very different. Sometimes I’m spending time on a farm for a video shoot or photo shoot. If I’m organizing a program I might be spending my time writing and editing. I also do a lot of project management. What is one major challenge you have experienced in your career(s)? How did you overcome it?When I was at Iowa Corn managing their leadership development program I was in my mid-twenties and was in charge of people who were more senior than I was. It was a challenge to get them to see me as a credible resource and as the person in charge of the program. I worked really hard to gain their respect and trust so they didn’t see me for my age, but for what I could do. What is one piece of advice you would give young women trying to make their own mark in the agriculture industry? Show up and work hard. I think you need to show up every day and work hard every day. I think that always gets noticed, especially in the agricultural industry.
