With record numbers of exhibitors and hogs again, this event continues to grow and gain ac-claim as the biggest and most prestigious hog show in America. From my perspective, the Hampshire show at WPX is one of the highlights. Beyond the hogs that hit the ring, the World Pork Expo was a re-sult of the Hampshire Midwest Type Conference. You wonder if the Hampshire breeders who created that event ever imagined what it would be like today! This year’s Hampshire show certainly did not lack in quality amongst the two classes of boars and three classes of gilts. The judge this year was Darrell Drake and he was assisted by Wade Hendricks, both of Indiana. If you have not had the opportunity to watch these two sort a breed-ing hog show, you are missing out. Drake Purebreds has a long standing tradition of breeding practical and useful breeding hogs that have the ability to generate and offer longevity. Darrell and Wade did another great and ef-fi cient job of putting the classes together and describing the hogs. Thanks again for your work, Darrell and Wade! The Premier Hampshire Sire this year was GMW6 Keep Sake 8-4 owned by Hi Point Genetics, Illinois. Raised by Mike Watson, Indiana, this boar has done a great job of siring high quality males and females alike. Look him up at Hi Point! The Reserve Premier Hampshire Sire was JL6 Struts 24-4 owned by Day Farms Hamps, Oklahoma. JL6 Struts 24-4 has done an incredible job for Mike and Cody Day and if you are looking for something different in your gene pool that will sire consistency, you need to check this guy out. Mick and I saw Struts’ dam on a herd visit at Joe Lancaster’s last fall and she is one of the most impres-sive females I have ever seen. Congrats Mike and Cody! The Champion Hampshire Boar comes from a fi rm that is no stranger to exhibiting competitive Hampshires at NSR events. Congratulations to the Joostberns crew, Michigan, for bringing out another breeding piece to offer to the public. This boar struck me really hard when he hit the ring; a big bladed, wide chested boar that stepped down on a dense framework, but still offered some look. The son of NAJO6 Blind Ambition 6-7 struck me as one that would generate and could move you in a few different directions without sacrifi cing the fundamentals. I was really impressed with his rib shape and body mass for as comfortable as he was in his skeleton. Congratulations to Joostberns, this one heads back to Michigan at the price of $20,000. The Reserve Grand Champion Hampshire Boar comes from Stohlquist Showpigs, Illinois. Ryan and his family had an incredible week at the World Pork Expo; Champion Crossbred Gilt both in the Junior and Open Show, Reserve Bred-and-Owned Hampshire Gilt (littermate to the Reserve Boar) and it was capped off with this honor. There was a lot of buzz about the Stohlquist boar before arriving at WPX and he certainly rose to the occasion. Sired by JGR5 Lethal 58-7, the popular Jim Grimm boar purchased by Premium Blend in 2016, and out of an incredible sow sired by KORB4 All Eyes 23-7, this boar commanded attention when he hit the ring. Tall shouldered, impeccable in his design, and yet still read to be a stout-featured male hog that was not going to sacrifi ce muscle and power to add look. I think this boar has a bright future and if you want to make incredible barrows and productive females, I would highly recom-mend considering him in your breeding program. He heads to Indiana with the honor of top-selling boar at $32,000 to Upperhand Genetics and is appropriately named “Simple.”Next boar in the ring was Teagan Walker’s class 1 winner. Sired by JLM5 Legacy 10-1, the Walker boar was extreme in terms of his muscle and shape. He was a long bodied boar that offered the “look” that many are striving for in 2018. Yet he was built on a fl exible skeleton and offered the muscle for which the Hamp-shire breed is known. I think this one could prove to be an infl uencer in a few generations. He heads to Ohio with Santoro Swine Genetics for the price of $4,500. Next up, Don R. Smith, Ohio, drove a really com-plete, problem free boar to 2nd place in Class 1. Sired by RMI6 Deadly Force 7-4, Don R.’s boar struck me as one that can make improvements without sacrifi cing the fundamentals. A long striding, up-headed boar, he re-turns to Ohio with Ward Hampshire Farms for $2,000. The second highest-selling boar of the sale hit the ring next. Coming from a fi rm that’s not unfamiliar to the Hampshire breed, Steve and Derek Earnhart, Indiana, brought a boar that was the genuine source of power. He was as opened up in his foundation as any in the show and was complimented by the muscle and shape that we all have come to expect from Earnhart hogs. I’m guessing that if we had scanned this boar, he would have broken the machine! He is sired by JSE Trump Card 118-2, housed at West Texas Boar Stud, Texas, who had a re-ally solid run in 2018. When the hammer dropped, this boar headed to Indiana with Premium Blend Genetics for $27,000 and was deemed the name “Spirit Animal.”While the boar show was small, I would encour-age you to study the sale results and pedigrees. There were a lot of different types and kinds in terms of boars offered and I’m confi dent you could fi nd one in the line-up to meet your needs!Moving to the gilts, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of females exhibited at WPX. I had the honor of commentating the Hampshires on Walton Webcast-ing with Jim McCoy (Thanks for joining in Jim and great seeing you at WPX!), and we consistently mentioned the opportunities to invest in some females that could begin or enhance your Hampshire program. Collectively, these gilts were a solid set of females for any color and I was thoroughly impressed with the sale offering. We started the sale off with Sydney Cain’s, Iowa, Fourth Overall Hampshire Gilt in the Junior Show. Cain’s do not often let this kind go so we thank them for the opportunity. The gilt was impeccable in her build, had the front end design and look that many are striving for in 2018, and had more rib and body than Mick Bellamy and I combined! She simply reads like a brood sow to me and I think that Schenken Genetics, Texas, made a great buy at $3,100. Congratulations to all involved! Hitting the ring next was Kolton Kilmer’s, Indi-ana, Champion Hampshire Gilt in the Open Show. Sired by JKK5 Benchmark, this gilt was a true breed-ing piece. She was as robust as any in terms of her rib and body, stout in her bonework and offered the look and presence in which we strive. I think this one has the making of being a tremendous Hampshire fe-male. Blake Danner purchased this gilt for $4,400. In next was Shelby Greathouse, Texas. Shelby has had a great run at NSR events in 2018 and World Pork Expo was no exception. Shelby’s gilt stood second behind the champion in class and captured reserve champion honors. Sired by Thunderman at Cain’s and a littermate to the gilt that leads off the sale, Shelby’s gilt from the side was capti-vating. Tall at the point of her shoulder, level in her design and a near fl awless skeletal base commanded the atten-tion of those ringside. When the hammer was dropped, she was high-selling gilt at $10,000 to Blake Danner. Following Shelby was Kipton Edie’s, Indiana, Class 2 winner. Sired by DFH6 Skip Day, Kipton’s gilt was a moderate framed, stout featured gilt that offered a great deal of fl exibility and comfort. She strikes me as one that if mated correctly could sire the next great herd boar. Blake Danner ties in again at $3,300. Michael St. Clair, Oklahoma, hit the ring next with his class 1 winner. This gilt hit me as really basic in her build and problem free. Her depth of body and impeccable skeletal angles make her one that should be interesting to follow in the future. This gilt had a beautiful underline and feminine feature. Sired by CVOE6 Statement 18-1, this gilt makes her way to South Dakota with Dakota Gold Showpigs for $700. In next was Kayla Bennington’s third place gilt from class 3. A littermate to the champion, she offered very similar pieces in terms of breed sow power and potential. Blake Danner assembles what looks like to be a great set of Hampshire females and rounds out his set with this lady for $2,800. Another highlight of the sale was Holden Vandivort’s gilt from class 3 sired by RLR6 Range Wars 16-2. This gilt was a true breeding piece. She offers an impressive look from the side but steps down on as dense of a skeletal base as what we saw all day. I think she could be a herd boar generator deluxe. She goes to a great home in Nebraska at Baade Genetics for $5,250. I would encourage you to read through the sale order and study the results of the show as you look to build or enhance your Hampshire program. On behalf of the NSR, I would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters that helped make WPX 2018 a success. Special thanks to National Pork Producers Council, National Pork Board, Lake Land College, Oklahoma State University Swine Club and both the NJSA and Team Purebred Junior Boards for all your assistance throughout the week. This year’s Expo was certainly a new experi-ence for myself, being on staff with the NSR instead of spending my week as an exhibitor. This new role really gave me a different perspective on NSR/NJSA events. You never truly understand the magnitude of time and effort it takes to put these shows on until you have been behind the scenes. So, hats off to all of NSR’s staff and the NJSA Junior Board of Directors for their work to make these events such a great experience for participants! The Landrace breed may not have been huge in num-bers this year, but anyone who got to sit ring side knows that the show was still full of quality and there were many opportunities to snag some great breeding pieces from the sale. Mike McCoy, Ohio, served as this year’s judge for the Landrace show. While it didn’t take him long to sort through two gilt classes and a trio of boars, Mr. Mc-Coy still did an excellent job lining up and describing all the hogs in this year’s show! A big thank you goes out to Mike for working through our show, as well as a shout out to Mr. Ron Kreis for his work on the auction block. Our Premier Landrace Sire this year was CNTM6 He’s Got It 7-12. He is housed at Upperhand Genet-ics, Indiana, and swept this year’s Landrace show, siring the pair of littermates that were named both champion boar and champion gilt. It’s clear that he is stamping his progeny with his incredible stoutness of feature without sacrifi cing fl exibility. The Reserve Premier Landrace Sire this year was PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3, a boar housed at Crossroads Genetics, Indiana. It’s no secret that May-hem has had quite the impact on this breed as well. Kolton Knauth’s, Illinois, He’s Got It son topped the boar show with his unique combination of power and soundness, and sold to Shaffer’s Goldrush, In-diana, for $900. Russell Whewell, Illinois, drove his JMG6 Secrets Out 54-6 son to Reserve Champion Landrace Boar honors. His elevation up front, length of body, and maturity pattern all read really well. Uniquely, success in the Landrace show was domi-nated by one fi rm, as Emma Howell, Texas, drove her He’s Got It daughter, bred by Knauth’s, to the top of the gilt show. It wasn’t a surprise that this gilt was a littermate to the champion boar, because she read with the same build and mobility, yet still coupled it with a great deal of width down low and spread up high. Con-grats to the Knauth family on such a dominant run at this year’s Landrace show! The Howell gilt also topped the Landrace sale, and should do great things for new owners, the Kerr family, of 4B Showpigs in Kansas. The Reserve Champion Landrace Gilt this year was shown by Will Flewelling, Michigan, with his KORB6 Ham-mer Down 22-1 gilt bred by Korb Farms, Ohio, another family that has seen great success breeding Landrace hogs. The Flewelling gilt represented the true strengths of the breed, being so big centered and maternal in her look. She was purchased by Overmyer Acres, Michigan and should offer many pieces to help better the next generation. While both our champion and reserve gilts came out of class 2, the class 1 winner still stood in contention during the championship drive. She was a WTX6 Have You 72-4 daughter bred by the Woodruff Family, Iowa, and shown by Kabe Boysen, also from Iowa. The Knauth fi rm should have a fun time raising pigs out of a female with such a neat look from the side. They purchased this gilf for $700.Congratulations to all of our Landrace buyers. We are excited to see the impact your purchases can have on your operations! Thank you again to all the exhibitors, staff members, and breeders for making this year’s event such a success. For the last eight years you have heard that we have experienced record numbers. We again set new attendance records, when all the dust from check-in settled we only had three pens on the fairgrounds that had not been assigned to an exhibitor. If you have not experienced this event, you are miss-ing out on one of the best swine shows in the world.Yorkshires started the morning of shows for the pure-breds in the NSR ring. Mike Fischer, Texas, was back for a second year to handle the task of sorting through a deep set of Yorkshire’s. Thank you Mike for your hon-est evaluation of this great set of breeding hogs. The Premier Yorkshire Sire was awarded to KORB7 Leaps and Bounds 12-8 last summer’s world-record-selling boar owned by Upperhand Genetics, Indiana. The Reserve Premier Yorkshire Sire was awarded to RSY6 Amped Up 4-1 owned by Thompson Bros. Genetics, Ohio, and Schenken Genetics, Texas. Great set of hogs out of both of these sires!Landry Layton, Oklahoma, drove the Champion York-shire Boar at the 2018 WPX. This son of RSY6 Amped up 4-1 is awesome in his skeleton; the angels to his blade, knee and pastern are great and he can fl at go off his rear too. From the side he looks like a modern show hog that everyone is trying to make, tall shoulder and good look-ing from his blade forward. Combine this with his upper rib cage and plenty of muscle; he should be able to sire some great breeding hogs. He will make his way to Ohio, with Thompson Brothers Genetics, Schenken Genet-ics and Olsen Yorkshires, South Dakota, for $150,000 making him the high-selling boar at the 2018 WPX.Reserve Champion Yorkshire Boar honors were awarded to Norman Bros. and Son, Illinois, with their entry sired by NBS6 Big Motor 53-1. If you need a shot of power in your Yorkshire program I would study this one. This guy is a stout, big-skulled boar that is broad in his forearm and opens into a big rib cage. He is a big-bladed hog that has square, true shape down his top and a big, square hip from behind. When you get this one out on the concrete he has big feet and good bone. He looks like a show hog and has near--perfect feet and legs. He can drive for days and comes from a fi rm who has a reputation for their hogs going out and generating. Call Shaffer’s Goldrush, Indiana, they paid $25,000 to load him on their trailer. Scott Stauffer, Ohio, drove the next boar into the sale ring which won class 4. This son of RSY6 Amped Up 4-1 had the barn in a buzz from a bone perspective. This one is huge footed, big skulled and has a huge root to his tail. He is tall shouldered and has a great look from the side. He still has plenty of muscle and should help move the breed in a positive direction. If this guy interests you call Southern Gold, Indiana, they paid $32,000. Kilmer Swine Farm, Indiana, was in the ring next with a son of KORB7 Leaps and Bounds 12-8 that placed second in the oldest class. This one is wide chested, deep bodied, and stout featured. This great-designed boar will make his way to Nevada, with Dave Louk for the price of $750.Next in the ring is the winner of the youngest class of the day exhibited by Torpedo Farms Swine Genet-ics, Colorado. This son of MWCW6 Lessons Learned 1-7 is stout and is big at the ground with a transition to a square chest fl oor with a big rib cage. He has true muscle down his top, is square in his upper hip and wide based from behind. Purple Power Boar Stud, In-diana, loaded a good one on their trailer for $3,000.Ricker Yorkshires, Ohio, hit the sale ring next with their boar sired by KORB7 Leaps and Bounds 12-8. Kevin’s boar won the third class of the day. He is an-other one of those boars that is so complete and correct, that some people may question his generating ability. I promise this one has a bright future and will contribute to making the Yorkshire breed great again. He will head home with Gunderson Farms, Minnesota, for $5,500. The gilt sale kicked off with the entry from Oklahoma State University. They brought you a true foundation female sired by 3HHF6 The Warden 3-7. I think this gilt has a bright future; she is so sound this lady fl oated around the ring. She is killer from the side and is taller shouldered and feminine up front. Plus, she is ideal in her frame size, is long bodied and has a great underline. I promise this lady doesn’t have a lot of fi t and fl uff on her. She will make her new home with Purple Power Boar Stud, Indi-ana, They paid $5,000 for this great champion female. The next gilt in the ring was the reserve champion entry from Hahn Genetics, Indiana. Kent’s gilt is out of CDO7 Woolly Legs 2-4. If you like your brood sows feminine, powerful and fl awless from the side, then this lady was for you! She is extended ahead of her blade, is tall fronted, level designed and awesome out of her hip. This lady combines all that power into an attrac-tive profi le and still looks like a modern show hog. She will go to work for Lonnie Ploeger, Iowa, for $4,000.Emily Mead of Sturgis, Michigan, drove her entry to the ring next and she won class 3.
