The 2018 edition is in the books and was another successful event. The week was full of good hogs, fellowship and a much needed rain late in the week. This year’s Duroc portion of the show was very capa-bly judged by Brett Beyers, Illinois. Brett is an extremely successful breeder and did not hesitate to step forward when his name was called. He was assisted by brother, Todd Beyers,Texas, and they did a great job of stressing the basics, while still reaching out when the need arose. From all of us here at the NSR, thanks guys! Great job!The Durocs kicked off the sale at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. We led off the sale with the Champion Duroc Boar of this year’s show. The winner of class 4, this Nor-man Bros. and Sons, Illinois, entry was sired by LEVI5 35 to Life 35-3. This was one that just had “the look.” Tremendously extended in the front 1/3 of his skeleton with a big, square top and an impeccable set of feet and legs, this is one that can sure make red hogs better. With the history the Norman fi rm has for making hogs that breed on for their new owners, there’s no reason to think this one won’t join that growing list. He got a great home as the judge stepped forward to take this one back to Illinois. Thanks Brett for the job you did and for believing in this great breed. At $3,250, he’ll get a great chance! The Earl Cain and Family’s reserve champion was up next. This September boar was the winner of class 1 and was sired by JSE6 Enterprise 23-2. This young fella was an extremely wide made hog with a bunch of muscle and a really correct and heavy skeleton. When he changed own-ers, Schenken Genetics were the new owners at $5,250. He will be staying in Texas to make better hogs. Thanks!Next up was Stewart’s Duroc Farm with their son of SDF5 He’s The Light 60-6. The winner of class 5, this one would prove to be quite popular! This one was as powerful and stout as any in the barn. He was big all over. Big ribbed, big topped, big legged, big footed, big skeletoned and yet still as good on the move as any. When the hammer dropped he headed to Ohio with Thompson Brothers Genetics at a sale-topping price $30,000. This one will be available for everyone to sample. Thanks Broc, Luke, and Eli!Norman’s second boar in the ring and the winner of class 3 came next. Another son of LEVI5 35 to Life 35-3 this boar was another one that combined all the basics of soundness, production and muscle with a really at-tractive profi le. At $1,700, he’s also headed to Ohio with the Sharrett Family. Thanks, Doc! Great buy.W2 Showpigs, Texas, had the winner of class 2. Sired by the record-selling RWWF6 Attention 37-1, this one was a moderate framed, stout and square made boar that looked like he could really make barrows. He will stay in Texas and get a chance to do that with the Wann Family for $450Ellett Vann,Texas, started the gilt portion of the sale with his champion. The winner of class 5, this daughter of TRE6 First Class 12-2 was a notch bigger framed, extremely big bodied gilt that had muscle and a big, wide skeleton. This isn’t the fi rst time this young man has had the champion at Belton. Thanks for sharing her, Ellett! She got a great home with Clarence and Mary Schmidt, Texas, for $2,300. Really good buy.Chuck and Ben Olsen, South Dakota, were the own-ers of the reserve champion and class 7 winner. Sired by ILL6 TCG Bohannon 13-5, this lady was as square made, functional and practical as any shown. She still was ex-treme enough to make change as evidenced by a huge chest fl oor, extra mass and dimension up high, and a really high quality underline. She got a great home with Robbie Phillips, Texas, at the sale’s second top fi gure of $3,750.Next up was Matti Mann and her class 6 gilt. She was sired by ESSP6 Final Thought 21-2. This gal was true and square made coming and go-ing with an extra correct build. She will stay in Texas with good, young breeder Kellen Floyd for $600.Smith and Healea had the winning entry in class 8. Sired by KTB6 Watch ‘N Learn 6-3, this one was a really big hipped, stout one that still had good ex-tension with some femininity. She is also staying in Texas with Claire Roane for the price of $1,500.Jack Rodibaugh and Sons were in next with their winner of class 4. Sired by SDH6 Alcatraz 224-2 this one was as long necked and elegant fronted as any shown. She was still able to combine that with a good functional build and really good shape. She’s headed to Illinois with Russell Whewell for $500.Young Riley Clinard had the winner of class 3. Sired by MHK6 Bryzzo 1-2. This was another fe-male that had a really attractive profi le with extra length of neck and hip. She’s making the trip to Louisiana with Cameron Plauche for $500.In next was the class 2 winner exhibited by Robin Ridge Farms. Mike’s gilt is a daughter of JOSE5 American Picker 3-3 was another young gilt that had extra skeleton size with really good feature and a good square build. She’s headed to Louisiana Tech University for $300.Chuck and Ben Olsen also had the class 1 winner. This CDO6 He’s It 215-2 daughter was one of the youngest gilts shown. She possessed a great hind leg, big wide chest fl oor, and great shape and body dimension. She tied for the second-top-selling female at $3,750 and is headed to Indiana with the Beck Family. Thanks, Adam!Another gilt of note was the Country Market Farms gilt that was 2nd in class 3. Freakishly heavy structured and wide skeletoned, this one was as wild as any hog there. Combine that structure with body mass and muscle and this one could be a changer. This daughter of LSNB6 Feel the Burn 36-3 is headed to Oklahoma to Kent Mclemore at a sale topping $6,250. Mike McCoy, Ohio, had the duty of judg-ing the belted breed. He asked good friend and talented hog man Jake Holt, Ohio, to join him in the ring, and it was a pleasure to watch this duo discuss the offering. The Premier Sire this year went to DHS6 Barn Talk 15-3 owned by Hi Point Genetics, Illinois. This boar has been popular in recent history and is making a name for himself. The Reserve Premier Sire went to TBRO5 Bush League 139-2 owned by Drake Purebred Farms, Indiana. If you have been paying attention to shows lately, Dar-rell has driven a great set of Bush League hogs, and I’m sure we will continue to see good hogs from this sire.No stranger to winning Hampshire shows, Austin Joostberns, Michigan, exhibited this year’s Champion Hampshire Boar. A son of RRPA6 Hi Water 2-2 and going back to a TSOB3 Sock ‘Em 1-7 dam. Austin’s boar really demanded attention when he hit the ring. This hog had the basics covered of being a good built, good looking boar that had plenty of extras to go along. From the side, his angles and proportional design blended into a true show boar look. His stout skull, bold rib shape and fl ex-ible skeleton can sure help make an impact on the next generation. Congrats to the Joostberns crew on bringing a great example of a Hampshire boar and also to Shaf-fer’s Goldrush, Indiana, on purchasing the champion.George & Mike Watson, Indiana, brought the Reserve Champion Hampshire Boar to Belton. Mike’s boar was out of the popular GMW6 Keep Sake 8-4 boar that had people talking all winter. The sow side of this boar goes back to JSE5 Change Up 132-4. Change Up was an off the farm purchase Mike made from Steve and Derek Earnhart, Indiana. This boar has left his mark in the Watson herd and is always good to see in a pedigree. 18-2 represented so many qualities that are still needed in any breed. This boar looked like a herdsire with a stout head, big forearm and feet, while still having the kind of feet and legs to help make hogs better. Mike’s boar was good looking from the side and had the length of body to be a multi-purpose sire. Schwartz Livestock, Texas, will give him a shot in their program. Good luck with this reserve champion boar.Arkfeld Genetics, Nebraska, won the fi rst class of boars with a FNKA3 Wild Turkey 2-2 sired boar. In the past couple of years, Arkfeld’s have gotten along very well with Wild Turkey sired hogs. Some of my favorite gilts at past shows happen to be Wild Turkey gilts. This particular boar hit me like a fast growing, big ribbed kind of boar that met the surface with big feet and a fl exible set of running gear. His balance and top line looked like he would sure be able sire competitive and very functional females. The class 3 boar winner was H&H Hampshires, Ohio. The whole H&H crew made the trip to Belton, and after taking in all the sites in Waco, Texas, they showed a pretty good kind of breeding hog. This boar was sired by JLM3 Carry On 21-1 and out of a JM3 Bumpercar 2-5 sow. This is a solid and predictable pedigree that has won shows across the country, as well as helped make an impact in several Hampshire herds. Frank’s boar is a moderate, stout constructed boar that carries tons of shape and power up high, all while being heavy boned and big footed. Real McCoy Genetics, Ohio, will add this guy to their boar lineup. Be sure to check him out.The high-selling Hampshire boar this year came from Isla Grande Farms and John Graber, Ohio. Rick’s boar was second in class 1, this son of TPSP5 Believe The Hype 69-1 was one that has some of the extras we like to talk about. He’s a heavy boned, big footed boar that works lots of extra shape and dimension up high. He is a big bladed hog that opened up with a big fore-rib and left with a wide pin set. Congrats to Rick, and good luck to Lean Value Sires, Boblenz Edmonstone Genetics, and Sollars Farms, Ohio, on their purchase. We had a great gilt show consisting of six really strong classes this year. It was great to see a blend of breeders and junior members bringing and showing such qual-ity females. The champion gilt this year was driven by Engnell Brothers, Illinois, with a daughter of CODS6 The Process 8-1. The Process was the champion boar at the 2017 Winter Type Conference, shown by Cody & Saman-tha Smith, Indiana. This boar was certainly the talk of the Hampshire breed last winter after the show, and there have been some quality hogs out of him. The Engnell gilt is another example of what we have seen out of The Process. Congrats to Engnell on bringing out a great female and good luck to Sophia Breiner, Ohio, on her purchase.Reserve Hampshire Gilt honors went to Allyson Warwick, Texas, with her class 6 winner out of JSE6 Man Amongst Boys 73-6 x BOLN1 Point Maker 118-3. I’m sure Allyson had a great season showing this gilt and congrats to her on fi nishing up the season with another banner at Belton. Allyson’s gilt is one that I call effortless. Her feet legs and joints all work in such a way that lends to making Hamps better. She looks like a lady up front. Her head, neck and face reads like a female, and I would say she will be an easy one to match up when breeding season comes around. David Bragg, Texas, will put her to work on his operation.Norman Bros & Son, Illinois, won class 1 of the Hamp-shire gilt show. Many of you know Norman’s usually don’t bring females out, especially ones of this quality, but they let go of a good one this time. Their gilt’s pedigree reads DHS6 Barn Talk 15-3 x JLM3 Carry On 21-1. Talk about a show winning pedigree. This gilt hit the ring heads up and show ready, her presence from the side is second to none. She’s extra extended up front. I call her a moder-ate gilt that sure looked like she could raise a herd boar.Kamden Hutton, Texas, drove the class 2 winner. Lot 190-1 was a RLR6 Range Wars 16-2 x BOLN4 Man Amongst Boys 23-3. Range Wars is one of those boars that has had a great run so far. He’s certainly always in Blaine Evans | blaine@nationalswine.comNSR Field RepresentativeFrom the Field85APRIL/MAY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 AprilMay SE Form.indd 854/4/2018 9:30:29 AMthe conversation when it comes to talking about what to breed to. He has stamped them with some extra stoutness but not given up look or structure. Bill drove this heavy boned, good looking gilt. She’s one that her length of body, frame size and extension up front all match. I like her look from the side, her belly line and roll to her rib. I think this is a gilt that we could hear from in the future.Drake Purebred Farms, Indiana, won class 3 with a daughter of the Reserve Premier Sire TBRO5 Bush League 139-2. I have always admired the Drake program, and as of lately, I have been a big fan of the Hamps they have been bringing out. You always know that when you add a Drake female to the herd you won’t have to worry about much. This gilt reads to me to be once again proof of that. From the side, she’s attractive, feminine and very good built. Her rib shape and body all looked like a productive kind of gilt and her muscle reads like a Hampshire should. The class 5 winner was Kenzie Short, Texas, with a JLM3 Carry On 21-1 x AAHH3 Grus Outlaw 27-3 gilt. This gilt was another that you could tell had been campaigned this show season, and I’m sure she won a banner or two for Kenzie. I really like this pedigree for a female. She blends genetics that have been dominate currently. Look, design and balance were all in check with Kenzie’s gilt. She sure looks like one that could fi t into many sow lots.It was another very successful Southwest Type Confer-ence this year, and the Hampshires had a strong showing. It’s always nice to see good belted hogs. A special thank you needs to be extended to the Blinn Community College students, Texas, who helped us in the ring during show and sale days. We can always count on the Blinn crew to be polite to the exhibitors, as well as work hard to make the show run smoothly. A thank you as always goes to Col. Kevin Wendt, Ohio for taking on the duties of auctioneer-ing. It’s a pleasure to get to work with you. Good luck, and thank you to everyone for helping make the 2018 edition of the Southwest Type Conference a success.Hampshire Boar Show Results BOARS CLASS 1 HampshirePlaceLot No. ExhibitorENSireDam's Whether it’s boars that have left their name in the breed’s history or females that have made herds better. This year was no exception to that com-mon theme. It was our pleasure to have Terry Shaffer, Indiana, step in the ring and judge the Landrace show at Belton. Terry just had a handful of classes, but he certainly found good hogs and quality in every class. The Premier Sire award this year went to PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3 owned by Crossroad Genetics, Indiana. Congrats to Adam and the crew on their continued success with Mayhem. The Reserve Premier Sire award was given to Dale Wilde, Texas, and McGrew Show-pigs, Illinois, on JMG6 Secrets Out 54-6. Secrets Out has been a real popular sire in the last few months. Good job to Wilde and McGrew with Secrets Out.Champion Landrace Boar honors went to McGrew Showpigs with their class 2 winner. A JMG6 Secrets Out 54-6 x WTX4 Got ‘Em 14-6 son that certainly had everyone’s attention on show day. Landrace boars with that kind of stoutness of feature, bold body shape and added power don’t come along every day. This boar was able to combine a herd boar feature with a fl exible skeleton and sure didn’t give up the look and design it takes nowadays. Good job McGrew’s on bringing another great example of a Landrace out, and good luck to Shaf-fer’s Goldrush, Indiana, on their high-selling purchase. The reserve champion was also exhibited by McGrew. Lot 72-4 won class 1 and then went on to be named reserve. Another son of JMG6 Secrets Out 54-6 this time out of a KORB2 Revolution 12-2 sow. McGrew’s were not messing around when they loaded up to come to Belton, Texas. This Secrets Out son was a little differ-ent from the champion in a few ways. In my mind you can’t paint one any better looking from the side. His balance and skeleton is laid in him right. He covered the ring with fl ex and ease. This boar’s pliable skeleton and look reads like one capable of generating show gilts and breeding stock that will work. Behrmann Hog Farm, Illinois, took this guy home and will put him to work.Three classes of females made up the gilt show this year, and the quality was strong in every class. The cham-pion gilt came out of class 3 and was exhibited by Brooks Barker, Texas, with a PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3 x JMG4 Going Green 12-2 gilt. A pedigree that has a track record of winning as of late, this gilt had the attention of everyone at Belton. She ended up being the champion and high seller. Her ability to combine a show ring presence and pattern with a shot extra skeleton is not easy to do. Good work to the Barker family with showing this exceptional female. The reserve champion gilt comes from Peyton Hill, Oklahoma. Peyton’s gilt was sired by WTX6 Have You 72-4 and out of a KORB4 Overthrow 23-8 sow. The Hill gilt was one that has the extra show ring look and design. A tall fronted, good looking gilt that was re-fi ned about her head and face. She looks like a lady and moved like a cat. She’s the kind of gilt that will be easy to mate and should sure help out any herd.Morgan Baethge, Texas, drove the class 1 winner, Morgan’s gilt was sired by the Premier Sire PCHS6 May-hem 21-3 and goes back to a JMG4 Grus Wall Street 26-6 sow. I’m sure Morgan had a good time feeding and showing her gilt this season. This gilt to me looks like one that will go home and adjust to being a sow. Her extra body, bulk and stout skull reads like a generator. As always, thank you to our great ring help from Blinn College, Texas. We can always count on the Blinn crew to do a great job assisting with the show. Col. Ron Kreis, Ohio, had the duty of auctioneering the Landrace breed and once again provided a professional and fi rst class job helping breeders market their Landrace breeding stock. Congrats to all the Landrace breeders on brining a good set of hogs that I’m sure we will hear from in the future.
