< PreviousJUNE 2019 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE 30 3 2019 Jun SE Form.indd 305/9/2019 6:16:29 PMWest Lafayette, Indiana March 19, 2019 It is my pleasure to present the following informa- tion as compiled in the annual report of the National Swine Registry, an LLC partnership comprised of the American Yorkshire Club, Hampshire Swine Regis- try, United Duroc Swine Registry and the American Landrace Association. The Yorkshire, Hampshire, and Duroc associations each represent a 30 percent stake in the financial affairs of the NSR, while the Landrace are represented by 10 percent. Collectively, these four breeds represent more than 80 percent of the purebred hog registrations in the country, and are incorporated into the breeding schemes utilized by commercial swine production throughout the world. The structure of the NSR is such that nearly all of the income and expenses accrue to and flow through the organization. Each breeds equity in the association is adjusted each year depending on profit and loss experienced by the association. 2018 can be summarized as a constant motion of change. New staff, new policies and changing economic times have differentiated 2018 from some others over the past 25 years. The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) continues to drive enthusi- asm and exponential growth in youth participating in the exhibition of purebred swine. With almost 10,574 members, the NJSA is recognized as the largest junior livestock association in the country. Moreover, the growth of education and development in this or- ganization continues to add value to the talent pool of the greater swine industry. Additionally, commer- cial producers play and integral role in the sustained success of the NSR. Through programs like STAGES ™ and the development of relationships with strategic partners internationally, the NSR continues to evalu- ate and add value to this sector of our business. The Seedstock EDGE staff continues to make progress in the field of digital and social marketing campaigns as demonstrated through our highly recognized social media platforms and newly developed digital mar- keting programs. Finally, I would be remiss if we did not recognize the diligent and critical work of our pedigree department. From frontline interaction with the membership to rigorous data processing, the life- blood of our association continues to be the impor- tance of breed promotion, lineage and integrity. In summary, I humbly invite you as members to study the status of the association carefully. The key to success for the NSR has been and always should be, an actively engaged membership who has owner- ship and stake in the greater organization. Moving forward, NSR intends to refocus towards a member centric approach through improved communication strategies and transparency. A heartfelt thank you goes out to each of our staff for your exceptional efforts and commitment to the NSR membership. Your work ethic, professional service, and resiliency does not go unnoticed. Additionally, thank you to our dedicated breed boards and execu- tive committee members for your leadership and ser- vice to the largest swine breed registry in America. Wishing each and all a profitable and successful 2019, Clay Zwilling Chief Executive Officer National Swine Registry TO THE ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL SWINE REGISTRY Clay Zwilling Chief Executive Officer 31 JUNE 2019 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE 3 2019 Jun SE Form.indd 315/9/2019 6:16:29 PMMeet the Boards At the NSR Annual Meeting held March 19, in West Lafayette, Indiana, new members and officers were named to the breed boards and the NSR Executive Committee. 2019 Duroc Board of Directors (l to r): Jayson Butts, Wis.; Don R. This information and high- lights can be found at nationalswine.com. Furthermore, each breed voted and approved annual contributions to the National Junior Swine Association. Additionally, staff are planning a Strategic Planning Session with industry leading geneticists and seedstock producers to evaluate the current populations of individual breeds and strategies for the future of breed composition testing. Finally, staff were given directive to evaluate current DNA testing lab options and poten- tially seek service from a lab that will speed up processing results, decreasing cost, without sacrificing quality of results. DUROC • Continue Weanling Donation Animals at NSR Fall Classic (Tres Amigos and Brock Herren will provide animals for 2019). • No changes were made to DNA Breed Profile testing. • Kevin Wendt was selected as the auctioneer for Durocs. HAMPSHIRE • Continue the Hampshire-Sired Barrow Class for The 2019 Exposition and reassess after the event in 2019. • Significant discussion regarding the current state of Breed Profile Testing as it relates to the Hampshire breed. Recommendations were made to seek opportunities to consider additional consulting on where the breed profile testing program goes in the future. The Hampshire Board will meet again mid-summer after the Strategic Planning session to consider options and develop a timeline for the future of breed profile testing. • Significant discussion with membership that participated in the meeting suggested incorporating parent- age testing into considerations for the future. The board will review these suggestions after the summer Strategic Planning Session. • Hampshire Board to meet summer of 2019 to evaluate current results and evaluate current policies and timelines related to testing of females. • Kevin Wendt was selected as auctioneer for Hampshires. LANDRACE • Board voted to change by-laws to allow senior members to run for the Landrace Board even if the sows or litters are recorded in a junior members name or account. Information will be provided to the Landrace membership and voting ballots sent out later in 2019. This procedure will be evaluated and implemented via the Landrace Breed By-Laws. • The board discussed promoting Landrace at other national shows, specifically, the Oklahoma Youth Expo and Tulsa State Fair, to enhance value of Landrace genetics. • Significant discussion ensued regarding the current state of breed profile testing. Considerations includ- ed providing breeders with percentage information without jeopardizing international markets, plans to increase requirements and how breed profile testing would affect junior members. Ultimately, the board decided to wait until more test data was gathered through spring and summer of 2019 to assess the breed profile testing. To collect more data, the board requested that NSR staff collect samples from the Top 5 in the Landrace breed awards at NJSA events to be used only for research purposes and help build a more robust and relevant genetic base. • General discussions were considered on programs to promote exhibiting Landrace and scholarship op- portunities for youth members. • Ron Kries was selected as the Landrace auctioneer. YORKSHIRE • The board discussed future opportunities to promote breeders and elite sows through a “Sow Hall of Fame.” • The board discussed future marketing opportunities and exhibition classes for Yorkshire genetics through the potential of Yorkshire “Influenced” classes or divisions and reemphasizing the value of infusing York- shire genetics into crossbred breeding schemes. • Ron Kries was selected as the Yorkshire breed auctioneer.
