This $500 scholarship was established to recognize one member of the NJSA Board of Directors each year for his or her outstanding contributions and service to the members of the NJSA. This award is intended to recognize the NJSA board member who has went above and beyond in their service to the organization during the past year.
Shaffer is an extremely active member in the NJSA and currently serves as the president. She has served on the leadership committee for two years and helped to plan the National Youth Leadership Conference. In addition to this Shaffer has started work on a new NJSA program, NJSA ambassadors.
Shaffer has been an ambassador for NJSA herself. She has spoken at the National FFA convention to inform FFA members about the opportunities in the NJSA. She has been an integral part in the success of the Boot Camps, giving presentations on showmanship and also planning ice breaker games. She has attended the NSR annual meeting to inform board members about the NJSA activities and has written numerous articles for The Pinnacle.
She says being a successful board member is the ability to wear many different “hats”. She believes that the most important part of serving on the board is serving the youth of the NJSA and the entire swine industry.
This will be Shaffer’s last year as a member on the board but she plans to maintain an active role in the NJSA. She plans to continue working on the NJSA Ambassadors, as well as help at shows and continue to recruit NJSA members, and possibly make a DVD for the MVP program.
Shaffer attends Purdue University and hopes to become an agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor following her graduation in December 2011.
