Events & Education Internship

Serve and help develop youth interested in the purebred swine industry.

Description: Do you love the purebred swine industry? Have a passion for working with youth? Enjoy facilitating programs and planning events? Then the Events & Education Internship is meant for you!

The Events & Education Internship will provide experience in planning and executing shows and leadership events for the nation's largest youth livestock organization. You will have the opportunity to assist Events and Education staff with planning and implementation of the World Pork Expo Junior National and the organization's pinnacle event – the National Junior Summer Spectacular. This internship provides experience in event planning, communications, youth leadership, and livestock show production.
  • Full-time position
  • Mid- to late-May through mid-July

Job Requirements: Required travel and show attendance includes the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Summer Type Conference and National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky. A valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications: Applicants should be going into their sophomore, junior or senior year in college majoring in agricultural education, agricultural communications, animal science, ag business and/or a related field of study. Applicants should be hardworking and self-motivated, detail-oriented, innovative, and work well with the general public and youth. Applicants should have a strong working knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs.

Field Staff Internship

Provide a link between swine breeders, members and the NSR staff. 

Description: A terrific opportunity to learn about purebred swine breeding operations and pedigreed show facilitation while you develop contacts within the swine industry!

The NSR Field Staff Internship provides on-the-road experience traveling with full-time NSR Field Representatives, and opportunities to both learn from and contribute to field activities. Responsibilities include visiting purebred swine farms and A.I. boar studs; assisting at NSR-sponsored events including the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Summer Type Conference and National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky.; assisting at state fairs; and other field staff duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: Extensive travel is part of this job, and a valid driver's license is required.

Marketing & Communications Internship

Communicate information and promote ideas to NSR members and the public.

Description: A fabulous opportunity to spend the summer working in the purebred swine industry while learning new skills and expanding your marketing and communications portfolio!

This is a tailor-made internship – you help make it what you want it to be! As the NSR Marketing & Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with NSR staff to personally design your internship curriculum and focus on the areas of marketing and communications in which you are most interested, or want to gain experience. Options* for a summer work plan include feature writing for Seedstock EDGE, advertisement design and page layout, magazine production, online content development, photography, video editing, promotional campaign design, and more! You will have the chance to collaborate on projects with the National Junior Swine Association, report on national shows, and brainstorm and develop new ideas for growing and promoting the NSR.

*Several projects such as show reports and feature stories are required for all interns.

Job Title: Vice President of Operations

Position Summary: The Vice President of Operations works cross-functionally with the Vice President of Global Technical Service and reports to the Chief Executive Officer. This position will be involved with various functions of all NSR departmental efforts; however, the selected candidate will be specifically responsible for the oversight and implementation of programs and activities related to the shows and sales, marketing and communications, and youth development programs, all of which are fundamental to the success of NSR. This position is also responsible for supervising, coaching and developing staff members within the Marketing and Communications and Events and Education Departments.

Location: The selected candidate is based in the office in West Lafayette, Indiana, however, considerable travel will be involved as the chosen candidate will represent NSR/NJSA at various swine industry activities and events.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Animal Science and background in purebred swine industry is preferred but not required

Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight, vision and leadership to NSR staff and membership
  • Coach, empower, and develop staff within Events and Education and Marketing and Communications Department
  • Lead NSR staff members in the organization and implementation of NSR and NJSA shows and events
  • Manage and protect NSR financial assets through analysis and budgetary processes
  • Promote, enhance and implement services and programs of the NSR and NJSA
  • Appreciate and cherish the value of documented swine genetics and breed integrity
  • Provide sales and marketing support for breeders utilizing the NSR live and online sales service
  • Represent the NSR/NJSA at regional, state and national events, and be responsible for the enforcement of breed eligibility requirements and the implementation of other NSR/NJSA policies at these events
  • Encourage involvement of youth in the swine industry through participation at various NJSA events and activities, as well as working with county and state youth organizations
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with various segments of the industry, including Extension, University Specialists, Shows and Fairs, Pork Producer Associations and allied industry
  • Contribute content for the NSR publication, SEEDSTOCK EDGE, including sales reports from NSR events and editorial
  • Promote subscriptions to and the marketing advantages of the SEEDSTOCK EDGE Media
  • Aid other NSR staff in other duties as needed
