Jason Shipley Memorial Awarded to Storer
The Shipley family of Newark, Ohio, presented the third Jason Shipley Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son to Heather Storer of Hillsboro, Ohio, on July 1 during the National Junior Summer Spectacular (NJSS) in Louisville, Ky.
The $1,000 scholarship was developed to honor an NJSA member who has a strong background in athletics and the swine industry. Storer is studying Animal Science at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. It is her goal to obtain her bachelor’s degree and then use her education to work in the swine industry.
Storer has been an active member of the NJSA since 2003. She has exhibited at the NJSA NJSS, Western Regional, World Pork Expo, National Barrow Show, Eastern Regional and Southeastern Regional. Also a strong leader, Storer has volunteered as a mentor for the Mentors Valuing People program and the NJSA leadership team, as well as assisted with organizing Ohio’s silent auction basket and state display contest. Highlights of her accomplishments include winning showmanship, skillathons, sweepstakes, Grand Champion Gilt Overall and the 2010 NJSA Outstanding Member Intermediate Division Scholarship.
Storer has also proven to be a strong competitor and enthusiastic player in several sports. She has participated in soccer, basketball and softball. She was named Most Improved Player in both soccer and basketball, as well as being named Offensive Player of the Year for the 2009-2010 basketball season. In December 2009, she was named the Edward Jones Outstanding Female Athlete of the Month.
From her involvement in athletics and the swine industry, Storer says she has learned the importance of hard work, dedication and teamwork. She says to work hard at something, you have to be dedicated and have a love for what you do. Whether it be cleaning pens and walking pigs or playing a sport that involves teamwork, the life skills and friendships Storer has made have become invaluable to her, she says. Her future goals include continuing to expand her purebred swine operation while working in the swine industry. She also plans to coach youth sports in her community.
