66th NBS® Progeny Test Winners

The 66th NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® recognized swine breeders  for outstanding entries in the 2012 National  Barrow Show® Progeny Test. The highest-indexing groups received a total of 15 SUPER SIRE and 12 PORQUE awards.

The following National Swine Registry members were presented awards for their winning entries in the 2012 Progeny Test.

Duroc-sired entry:

  • Waldo Farms of Dewitt, Neb. (SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards for entry sired by WFDM0 Crimson 250-4)
  • Whiteshire Hamroc of Albion, Ind. (SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards for entry sired by SDF0 Grus Tug Boat 74-8)
  • Waldo Farms of Dewitt, Neb. (SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards for entry sired by WFD0 Equinox 74-1)
  • Comparts Boar Store of Nicollet, Minn. (SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards for entry sired by CBSW0 F Lloyd 40-2)
  • Forkner Farms/TRULINE® Genetics of Richards, Mo. (SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards for entry sired by CC0 Rover 71-3)
  • Waldo Farms of Dewitt, Neb. (SUPER SIRE award for entry sired by WFD0 Harvester 44-3)
  • Waldo Farms of Dewitt, Neb. (SUPER SIRE award for entry sired by WFDM0 Wonka 253-2)

Landrace-sired entries: 

  •  Forkner Farms/TRULINE® Genetics of Richards, Mo. (SUPER SIRE award for entry sired by CC0 Freedom 45-10)
  • The Ohio State University of Columbus, Ohio (PORQUE award for entry sired by 1CR0 Maxium 443-6)

Yorkshire-sired entries: 

  • Whiteshire Hamroc of Albion, Ind. (SUPER SIRE award for entry sired by WHI9 Ulf 193-10)
  • Whiteshire Hamroc of Albion, Ind. (SUPER SIRE award for entry sired by WHI9 Tiedown 287-15)
  • Whiteshire Hamroc of Albion, Ind. (PORQUE award for entry sired by WHIH0 King Lear 265-13)

The Progeny Test is designed to analyze the offspring of purebred sires.Factors that influence final results are production performance at the test station, structural soundness of each pig, carcass composition, and eating qualities.

The top indexing sires in each breed and the entire test are recognized with SUPER SIRE and PORQUE awards.Averages for the 48 entries in the 2012 test were 1.82 lbs. average daily gain, 0.93 inches backfat at the 10th rib, 6.53 square inches loin-eye area, 6.0 (out of possible ten) soundness score, 5.60 loin pH, and 2.53% Intramuscular Fat (marbling).

This year’s Progeny Test attracted 384 pigs from seven states that represented five major purebred breeds. The 2012 Progeny Test was the 23rd to be conducted in conjunction with the National Barrow Show® since 1991. Another Progeny Test is scheduled to be delivered Friday, March 22, 2013.
