NJSS Checklist

By: Danika Miller

Packing for a week of challenge, excitement and success at the National Junior Summer Spectacular can be quite daunting and you may find yourself worrying about what you might forget. Have no fear! I have the fix for your packing anxiety! Below I have included the top things you do not want to forget when preparing for the 2018 NJSS.

1. The paperwork!

Do not forget your health papers, pedigrees and YQCA certification/ PQA card. Triple check to make sure you are packing the correct papers for the NJSS with correct ear notches. Check out the rules and regulations page, on the NSR website, if you are not sure what you need.

2. Boots, Belts and Show Shirts

It never failed at nearly every show growing up, we would forget one of the essentials. I would get a new show shirt, belt and most often new socks at the show! Make sure you are ready to step in the show ring multiple days!

Remember NJSS is air conditioned! Sometimes the barn is a little chilly so a light jacket is always a must pack.

3. The Show Box

Everyone has their own tricks to keep their animal looking top notch, but a few things that are always packed in my show box are: shampoo (whitening), conditioner (spray and good ole Suave), fly spray, triple antibiotic ointment, a curly hose, safety pins or a number clip,  pocket show brush, towel, large brush, water sprayer, show whips and zip ties.

4. Sweets and Treats (for your pigs and yourself)

Pack all the snacks! Sometimes there isn’t time to run and get food while the show is happening, so don’t forget to pack your favorite snacks. Do not forget to pack a few of your pigs’ favorite treats as well; hungry does not look good on anyone!

5. Swine is Fine Art Contest and Amazing Advertising Contest Entries

Don’t forget your creative paintings, photos and advertisements.

6. Extra Shavings

NJSS is a long show and you will want some extra shavings to keep your pigs cozy and clean. Shavings also make a great cards table!

7.Buckets on Buckets on Buckets

It never hurts to bring more than one watering bucket.

8. Camera

Don’t let the NJSS memories go undocumented! Take a lot of candid, memorable pictures to look back on. Be sure to tag the NJSA in your social media posts and use #NJSS18 to get in the show spirit!

9. Swim Suits and a Deck of Cards

Always be prepared for the spontaneous card games. Don’t forget about taking a trip across the street to Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay.
