NSR, Michigan State partner on postdoctoral position in swine genomics

By NSR | Published March 10, 2011

A postdoctoral position in swine genomics is available immediately to work at Michigan State University in close partnership with the National Swine Registry.

The duties associated with this position will consist of developing methods and tools for using high density Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genotype data in the swine industry. Projects the successful applicant may direct include; 1) Use of SNPs to assess breed composition, 2) Genome-wide association studies of industry collected phenotypes, and 3) Development of systems to implement estimation and reporting of genomic breeding values.
Applicants should have earned or soon be completing a Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics, Statistical Genetics, Computational Biology or a closely related field, and have experience working with high-throughput genotyping data. Good knowledge of at least one computer programming language is also required. The successful applicant must have strong analytical skills, be well organized and have good written and oral communication skills in the English language.
This position is funded by the National Swine Registry. The successful candidate will interact with scientists located at both the National Swine Registry and the Michigan State University Department of Animal Science. Through this partnership between NSR and MSU, the successful candidate will have access to high throughput SNP genotype data, breed registry phenotypic records and state-of-the-art computational facilities. The applicant will work in a dynamic environment, being part of a collaboration that includes over ten Ph.D. scientists, graduate students and support personnel. This position is for one-year with the potential for continued employment.
For more information please contact any of the following at Michigan State University: Dr. Ron Bates, (batesr@msu.edu), Dr. Juan Steibel (steibelj@msu.edu) or Dr. Cathy Ernst (ernstc@msu.edu), or Dr. Clint Schwab (clint@nationalswine.com) at the National Swine Registry. Salary is commensurate with experience and educational background.
Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae and contact information for three references, and be sent electronically in PDF format to Dr. Ron Bates at batesr@msu.edu.
