Hass and Phipps win The Maschhoffs Pork Production scholarships

By NSR | Published July 1, 2010

Cally Hass of Cassopolis, Mich., won a $1,500 scholarship from The Maschhoffs on July 1 at the National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., for her outstanding leadership and involvement in the swine industry.

Hass is a senior Michigan State University where she is majoring in animal science. She hopes to work in the agricultural industry, specifically in the swine industry. She says she feels it is her duty to do as much as she can to protect the industry that has become her way of life. Her interests are in youth, education and policy.

Hass is a eight-year member of the NJSA and has been very involved during that time. She has participated in a NJSA National Youth Leadership Conference, has shown and participated in livestock judging and showmanship at NJSS, World Pork Expo, National Barrow Show and NAILE. Currently, she is employed as the NJSA summer intern.

The Maschhoffs presented a $1,000 scholarship to Warner Phipps of Kearney, Neb. Phipps is a junior at Cornell University where he is studying developmental sociology and agricultural law. After graduation, he hopes to attend law school and eventually work in agricultural law.

A member of the NJSA since its establishment, Phipps has been involved with numerous NJSA shows and events, including showing, speech contests, judging contests and photography contests, and exhibiting hogs at the NJSS, NJSA Southwest Regional, American Royal and National Western Livestock Show. He helped to organize the first NJSS dance and has helped clean up after shows. He was twice awarded the NJSA Outstanding Member scholarships.

Applicants were required to submit an application, reference letters and an essay about the major challenge or opportunity for tomorrow’s pork industry.
