Gregory D. Johnson Memorial scholarship winner announced

By NSR | Published July 1, 2010

The Gregory D. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, given by his family in memory of their son who passed away in June 2007, was awarded to Hyatt Frobose of Pemberville, Ohio. Frobose was honored with this scholarship during a special presentation on July 1 at the National Junior Summer Spectacular (NJSS) in Louisville, Ky.

This $1,000 scholarship was created to honor a former National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) member who is pursuing an advanced degree in swine genetics, swine reproduction or swine nutrition. Criteria in selecting this year’s winner included academics, goals for future, collegiate involvement, swine industry experience and honors and NJSA experience and honors.

Frobose plans to complete his master’s degree in swine nutrition and animal welfare from Kansas State University in May 2012. Following the completion of his degree Frobose hopes to obtain a position in technical services and determine if he would like to continue on into a doctorate program. His career goal is to be an internationally respected consultant in livestock production practices and their effect on the welfare and productivity on the livestock, with an emphasis on swine.

Frobose has been an active NJSA member for 12 years. He was awarded the Visionary Leader Scholarship in 2009 and The Maschoffs, Inc. scholarship in 2008. Frobose served as the NJSA Eastern Director from 2007 to 2009 and was the vice president in 2008 to 2009. He has also served on the Leadership and Services committees. He was also active in 4-H and FFA, serving in various leadership roles and participating in a variety of projects.

Frobose is also active in the Ohio Pork Producers Council and the Ohio Cattleman’s Association. He served as the Ohio Pork Ambassador for in 2002. He is involved with the National Cattleman’s Beef Association – Young Producer’s Council.

At Kansas State, Frobose has been a member of Block and Bridle, and Collegiate Farm Bureau. While in grad school he was a founding member of Food for Thought, an animal agriculture advocacy organization. During his undergraduate time he was a member of the livestock judging and meats judging teams.

Jim Nelsson, swine extension specialist from Kansas State, says “Hyatt Frobose is truly one of the brightest young people I have ever met and has the potential to be one of the bright stars in a swine industry that continues to want and need outstanding human capital.”
