NSR buoyant as China opens to live swine

By admin | Published March 11, 2011

These daughter nucleus sows are owned jointly by the Fujian Yong Cheng Waldo Pig Breeding Company and Waldo Farms of DeWitt, Neb., and housed in Fuqing City, Fujian province, in China. They were shipped before the export ban began in 2009; U.S. producers hope to continue to develop joint venture herds by importing live swine to China. Photo: GeneLink 2010

(WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.) – The National Swine Registry and purebred swine breeders breathed a collective sigh of relief this week, learning exports of live swine to China could resume pending H1N1 testing. China has been closed to U.S. swine since April 2009, following the discovery of H1N1 virus in humans in the U.S.

The opening followed a request from the USDA APHIS Veterinary Services to Chinese authorities, requesting acceptance of temporary testing for H1N1 in order to resume exports. Earlier this week, the Chinese Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine responded [ … ]

Pork Checkoff honors John Mabry with Distinguished Service Award The Pork Checkoff honored John Mabry, director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University, as the winner of its Distinguished Service Award at the National Pork Industry Forum in Phoenix, March 3-5. The Distinguished Service Award is given annually to recognize the lifelong contribution to the pork industry of an outstanding leader.

“When John entered the industry with genetic consulting work, there was a real need out there to help people develop breeding systems and genetic systems that would maximize the heterosis and reproduction values,” said Everett Forkner, a pork producer from Richards, Mo., and National Pork Board vice president. “He brought that to the industry in a timely fashion; and covered a need that was there.  He helped to direct the genetic programs and systems that were not there. Through those efforts, John had a large influence on the [ … ]
