Are you interested in leading the National Junior Swine Association in 2011-2013? If so, consider running for the NJSA board of directors. Applications are available online at www.nationalswine.com and due March 1.

The primary responsibility of the National Junior Swine Association board members is to serve the NJSA in local, regional and national activities in a way that will educate, motivate and inspire current and potential NJSA members, swine breeders, parents and others. NSR reports litter recordings trend up in 2010

By admin | Published January 10, 2011

Accumulative litter recordings for the National Swine Registry in 2010 were up over 2009 totals, the National Swine Registry announced today.

Darrell Anderson, NSR CEO, says, “This improvement halts a trend of slight decreases over the past several years, and is a positive sign for the purebred swine industry and our member-based organization.”

A total of 27,712 litters were recorded for the four breeds of Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire in 2010, with Duroc and Landrace litter registrations accounting for the boost. Both were up significantly, with Landrace recordings reflecting a 10 percent increase over 2009. Although down slightly compared to 2009, the Yorkshire breed still remains number one in total recordings with 11,846 litters cataloged in 2010. Yorkshire registrations have shown tenacity over time – dropping by only 522 litters compared to 1999 registrations.

Total litter recordings for all eight breeds in the National Association of Swine Records, which include the NSR [ … ]

Share your volunteer skills at the SE Regional Skillathon!

By admin | Published January 7, 2011

An NJSA Skillathon volunteer guides members through the contest at the 2010 NJSS.

Attention NJSA parents and volunteers! We are still looking for helpers to facilitate the NJSA Skillathon contest at the 2011 Southeast Regional in Perry, Ga., on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Volunteers in the NJSA Skillathon are critical to create a successful experience for NJSA members competing in this educational contest. Skillathon volunteers oversee one of the four stations in the Novice, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior divisions of the competition. They moderate the flow of members through the contest and score answers, but moreover, volunteers serve to reassure competitors, provide assistance if needed without giving the answer, and encourage the members who are participating. Being a skillathon facilitator is very easy, and rewarding — all it takes is a donation of your time!

Each volunteer will be provided a full set of instructions, along with an answer key to their station. [ … ]
