Jason Shipley Memorial Awarded to Storer
The Shipley family of Newark, Ohio, presented the third Jason Shipley Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son to Heather Storer of Hillsboro, Ohio, on July 1 during the National Junior Summer Spectacular (NJSS) in Louisville, Ky.
The $1,000 scholarship was developed to honor an NJSA member who has a strong background in athletics and the swine industry. Storer is studying Animal Science at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. It is her goal to obtain her bachelor’s degree and then use her education to work in the swine industry.
Storer has been an active member of the NJSA since 2003. She has exhibited at the NJSA NJSS, Western Regional, World Pork Expo, National Barrow Show, Eastern Regional and Southeastern Regional. The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) Visionary Leader scholarship was presented to Lynsee Shaffer of Albany, Ind. at the 2010 National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., on July 2.
This $500 scholarship was established to recognize one member of the NJSA Board of Directors each year for his or her outstanding contributions and service to the members of the NJSA. This award is intended to recognize the NJSA board member who has went above and beyond in their service to the organization during the past year.
Shaffer is an extremely active member in the NJSA and currently serves as the president. She has served on the leadership committee for two years and helped to plan the National Youth Leadership Conference. In addition to this Shaffer has started work on a new NJSA program, NJSA ambassadors.

Cally Hass of Cassopolis, Mich., won a $1,500 scholarship from The Maschhoffs on July 1 at the National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., for her outstanding leadership and involvement in the swine industry.
Hass is a senior Michigan State University where she is majoring in animal science. She hopes to work in the agricultural industry, specifically in the swine industry. She says she feels it is her duty to do as much as she can to protect the industry that has become her way of life. Her interests are in youth, education and policy.
Hass is a eight-year member of the NJSA and has been very involved during that time. She has participated in a NJSA National Youth Leadership Conference, has shown and participated in livestock judging and showmanship at NJSS, World Pork Expo, National Barrow Show and NAILE. Currently, she is employed as the NJSA summer intern.

The Gregory D. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, given by his family in memory of their son who passed away in June 2007, was awarded to Hyatt Frobose of Pemberville, Ohio. Frobose was honored with this scholarship during a special presentation on July 1 at the National Junior Summer Spectacular (NJSS) in Louisville, Ky.
This $1,000 scholarship was created to honor a former National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) member who is pursuing an advanced degree in swine genetics, swine reproduction or swine nutrition. Criteria in selecting this year’s winner included academics, goals for future, collegiate involvement, swine industry experience and honors and NJSA experience and honors.
Frobose plans to complete his master’s degree in swine nutrition and animal welfare from Kansas State University in May 2012. Following the completion of his degree Frobose hopes to obtain a position in technical services and determine if he would like to continue on into a doctorate program. [ … ]
