Purdue career night to provide information on pork industry careers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As students begin their search for internships and regular jobs, a career night on Oct. 3 will give them the chance to learn about opportunities in the pork industry. Hosted by the Purdue University Pork Interest Group, the Fall Pork Career Night will take place 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 3-113 of Lilly Hall.

Representatives from pork industry businesses MPPP Farms, Pig Improvement Company North America, Indiana Packers Corporation, JBS United, Novus International and Pfizer Animal Health will give brief presentations. They also will take part in a panel discussion about careers in commercial production, seedstock production, pork processing, the feed industry and supporting industry sales and technical support. Andon Boocher, a 2005 Purdue Animal Sciences alumnus, will share his experience in transitioning from college to a career in the pork industry. 2011 National Barrow Show Sire Progeny Test winners named

The NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Sire Progeny Test remains the most extensive, unbiased evaluation of progeny performance available to purebred swine breeders.

Currently, 12 different measures of progeny performance are recorded on every pig that completes the testing period. These include evaluations of carcass composition, growth performance, meat quality, and eating quality. These data are compiled and returned to participating breeders for use within their individual breeding or marketing program. 

Changes within the industry have lead to different production and marketing schemes utilized by purebred breeding herds. In general, these can be characterized as either: a) mainstream pork production aimed at efficient production of lean product, or b) production aimed at enhanced eating quality. Adwell and Hodson recognized at the 2011 National Barrow Show

Harold Hodson was inducted into the NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Hall of Fame.
Hodson has contributed his talents in many different arenas at the NBS®, starting in 1960, as high individual in the judging contest.

While serving as the judging coach at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Hodson coached two winning teams, in ’76 and ’78. In 1972, Hodson initiated the first “pilgrimage” and started the tradition that continues today where teams practice at different farms in route to the NBS®. His ability to evaluate livestock was recognized by his peers. Hodson has served on the truckload committee and has stepped into the ring to evaluate several breeds at the NBS®. His contributions to the judging contest will long be remembered, from serving as a member of the selection to committee and as the referee official to providing critique for judges in the 4-H/FFA division along with providing awards for top [ … ]

2011 National Barrow Show Judging Contest Results

AUSTIN, MINN. (Sept 13, 2011) — Winners in the 65th annual NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Swine Judging Contest held Sept. 12th in Austin, Minn., were Texas Tech University of Lubbock in the senior college division; Black Hawk East, Kewanee, Ill., in the junior college division; and Dekalb County 4-H, Ill., in the junior division.

The winning team in each of the three levels of judging competition was awarded according to points accumulated in the contest. This year’s contest attracted 72 teams and 406 participants.

Senior College Division
Texas Tech University won first place in the senior college division with a score of 3035 points out of a possible 3250 points.

The Texas Tech team competed against 14 other teams in the university division. Members of this team, coached by Ryan Rathmann and Bryan Bernhard, included Clay Burson, Brandi  Capps, Jordan Clem, Kody Lucherk, Clay Morrison, Logan Pritchett, and Brady Ragland.
