Hi everyone! Thomas here. In Georgia right now it is “cold”. A bone chilling 37 degrees with 15 mph winds, so we are freezing down here. I know, I know, 37 degrees really isn’t that cold but give me a break…I’m from Georgia! Hope you folks up North are staying warm because I’m sure it is colder up there. As I think about the North, I can only think about one exciting event coming up that allows me to travel to Kentucky, and it’s the annual National Youth Leadership Conference.
The National Youth Leadership Conference has become my favorite NJSA event and I am excited to travel to Lexington for this year’s conference. My first NYLC was in 2013 in Ames, Iowa and I still value the memories and friendships I made over that weekend. The one memory that sticks out the most is Brian Arnold or “Arnie”, attempting to put [ … ]
The Maschhoffs Internship Experience by Morgan Cox
The week before college classes started again, five students had the opportunity to spend a few days with The Maschhoffs in Carlyle, IL. Danika, Lexi, Jackson, Caleb, and I each won The Maschhoffs scholarship through the NJSA at the Summer Spectacular which came with a required four day internship at the headquarters. Our schedules worked out to meet over winter break and I am so happy it did!
I had the opportunity to study abroad in Dublin, Ireland this past semester which involved very little animal contact. This experience the week before classes started at Purdue made me very excited to keep learning this semester about the swine industry in all different aspects! For example, I thought I disliked genetics because of my classroom experiences but I’ve decided when you connect it with real life applications, genetics is actually pretty interesting!
At The Maschhoffs, we learned [ … ]
Last week at the NJSA Junior Board retreat members of our Junior Board of Directors were able to reflect on some great people and memories in their life. Read the responses of Morgan Cox and Lexi Marek below!
Question: Who is your biggest role model?
A (Morgan Cox): My biggest role model is someone I spent my entire childhood with. She has been both my babysitter and my partner in crime. She may be 10 years older than I am, but we are like sisters born only a few minutes apart. I call Rikki Hege my sister and I look up to her in just about every aspect.
Rikki is a wonderful wife, a beautiful mother of 2, and the only awesome hairdresser I will ever let touch my hair. She is always showing me the woman I want to become in my spiritual journey, family life, and work life. I admire how [ … ]

Well as I am writing this we have just finished up our winter show season in Georgia and St. Patrick’s Day is drawing near. Honestly, I have never really celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. I remember being in grade school and if one of us didn’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, we would get pinched. I never got pinched because I always wore something green. Even though I do not plan on doing anything special this year, there are a fair amount of parades that will take place around the country to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Boston, New York City, Savannah, and Philadelphia are among many of the cities having parades. I know from others’ stories the Savannah, Georgia St. Patrick’s Day Parade is great. Supposedly River Street in Savannah is packed to the brim with people dressed in green and/or people dressed as leprechauns. Also, word is that the [ … ]
The 2015 NJSA Boot Camp Leadership Conference held on February 14 at Lake Land College was a great success! With 35 youth and 14 adults present in Mattoon, Illinois, it’s safe to say we were ready for the festivities to begin. NJSA youth ages 8-12 from all over the Midwest, as well the NJSA Junior Board, NSR Staff, and numerous speakers were all in attendance. We even had a handful of Lake Land students there to help us out! The morning began with a Welcome speech given by Kaley Bontrager and Jon Althaus and from there, the fun never stopped!
Following the opening act, parents and kids were split into 2 smaller groups to kick off the morning. Bryn Jensson with the National Pork Board gave everyone an update on PEDv. Within her lesson, Bryn explained to everyone the importance of biosecurity and cleanliness among their swine projects and had each [ … ]
I attended my first NJSA National Youth Leadership Conference in 8th grade and had such a great experience I have been hooked on the NJSA. I was able to meet many kids who had the same interests and passion that I do, and then we learned about the swine industry by touring companies and listening to speakers. I immediately saw how important the NJSA Junior Board is to running events for youth and made a goal to one say serve on the NJSA Junior Board.
The NJSA Junior Board has given me the opportunity to continue to make connections and meet people. I have made great friends and I had the opportunity to help many younger exhibitors in the show ring. Every minute spent in the NJSA is very rewarding. I am honored to serve as your At Large Director on the 2014-15 NJSA Junior Board of Directors and I look [ … ]
