People at the 64th annual National Barrow Show in Austin are likely to outnumber hogs this year, 900 of them.
The NBS begins Sunday and continues until Wednesday at the Mower County Fairgrounds.
Besides providing the best judging competition in the nation (according to NBS officials) the event is a boost to the local economy. Hope Deyo, manager of the Americinn Lodge & Suites, said it will fill all three of ‘the Big Three’ motels (Americinn, Holiday Inn and Day’s Inn.) “I am always amazed at how many people are at this show,” she said.

Allen D. Leman Swine ConferenceSept. 18-21, 2010St. Paul, Minn.
One of the international swine community’s premier events, the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference will be held September 18-21. The Distinguished Lecture is new to the conference. Each year, the Leman conference draws swine veterinarians, producers, research scientists, industry experts, government officials, and leading producers from around the world. In addition to two full days of presentations and seminars on topics ranging from swine diseases to production to consumer issues, the conference will include a two-day pre-conference program, trade show exhibits, and scientific poster presentations. Allen D. Leman, a University of Minnesota Extension veterinarian, and Jim Hanson, director of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s continuing education program, initiated the conference in 1974 to present new information and discuss issues important to the swine industry. Dr. Clint Schwab, director of genetic and technical services for the National Swine Registry, visited Ukraine in July 2010 to both present information to swine producers in this country, as well as learn about their systems. Following are Schwab’s photos and descriptions of this tour.
This is the first of a four-part series. _______________________________________________________
“In late July, Dr. Harold Hodson, Dr. Tom Baas and I spent some time in Ukraine getting a clearer perspective on how U.S. genetic resources can be implemented. The trip was coordinated by Mr. Getman Vladimir, a Ukrainian engineer and breeding farm manager who we have developed a strong relationship with over the past several years. Vladimir is very well respected within the Ukrainian industry and has been using frozen semen from the U.S. for two years now. He has demonstrated the clear impact [ … ]
