Swine Farms: A Great Place To Work is the theme of this year’s Workforce Development Seminar set for Oct. 18 at the Country Inn & Suites, Mankato. The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Keynote speaker will be Bruce Vincent, the founder of Provider Pals and a nationally recognized agricultural advocate. Vincent’s opening talk, “So, You Want to Date My Daughter,” looks at how understanding society’s environmental and animal husbandry concerns is critical to engaging the public.

The National Swine Registry is currently seeking candidates for the position of field representative. The successful candidate will cover the Southwestern and Western states and will represent the National Swine Registry and the National Junior Swine Association at various events and functions. This position will be involved with various functions of all NSR departmental efforts; however, frequent interaction with NSR Marketing and Communications staff will be required in serving as a liaison for breeders in their individual marketing efforts. The successful candidate will also play an integral role in the facilitation and development of NJSA events.
This position will require considerable travel and could involve as many as 125 nights away from home annually. Location is flexible within the designated territory, but access to a major airport would be advantageous.
A degree in animal science and a background in the purebred swine industry is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate should [ … ]

Adrian Austin showed the mother of Sarah at the 2010 Eastern Regional where she was Champion Yorkshire female. Kane Austin showed her littermate sister who was Reserve Champion Yorkshire female at the 2011 Illinois State Fair Junior show. The Austins say “Sarah is a very long sided, feminine featured female who is adequate in her muscle shape and she is very sound in her movement. She is almost an exact replica of her mother with the exception of being a little longer and more expressive in her muscle shape, especially out through her hip and rump.”

Gordon Spronk, DVM, is the recipient of the 2011 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award. The award was presented at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, Sept. 17-20, 2011, in St. Paul, Minn. by Pfizer Animal Health and the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.
“We are privileged to honor such an exceptional animal health care leader,” says Steve Sornsen, DVM, MS, senior director, pork technical services at Pfizer Animal Health. “Dr. Spronk has provided knowledge and skill to many clients and has set an excellent example of leadership and dedication to not only his peers but also to the whole industry.”

NSR Marketing & Communications Intern

This is a tailor-made internship – you help make it what you want it to be! As the NSR Marketing & Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with NSR staff to personally design your internship curriculum and focus on the areas of marketing and communications in which you are most interested, or want to gain experience. NSR Field Representative Kade Hummel left the NSR in August to take a position as manager of the show feed division of JBS United. Hummel worked for the NSR since March 2005, when he started as a field representative focusing on the activities of the National Junior Swine Association before transitioning to a general field representative covering parts of the Midwest and California, Oklahoma and Texas. He was responsible for promoting purebred Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire swine, providing technical assistance to breeders, attending NSR and NJSA events, and promoting involvement in registry shows and sales. Hummel looks forward to management opportunities and a steady geographical work base in his new position. On behalf of the entire NSR, we thank Kade for his dedicated work and wish him the best in his new career.
JBS United enters agreement to manufacture, market and distribute Lindner Feed and Milling Company’s swine show feeds
SHERIDAN, Ind. – JBS United and the Lindner Feed & Milling Company have entered into an agreement for JBS United to be the exclusive manufacturer, marketer and distributor of Lindner’s Swine Show Feeds in the Midwest and other regions not currently served by Lindner Feed & Milling. The combined entity will co-brand Lindner’s existing products and operate as “Lindner-United.”
In addition to existing Lindner showpig feed products, this agreement also allows JBS United and Lindner to collaborate on new products. Lindner’s experience and success providing products for showpigs, combined with JBS United’s history of animal nutrition research, is expected to lead to exciting new products.
Lindner–United will offer the product line at existing JBS United locations and will be actively pursuing dealers throughout the Midwest to distribute the product line. Kade Hummel of Cabery, Ill., has [ … ]
