What a week looking at hogs, I have been out in South Dakota. I had great visits at Nelson Bros, Robert Rasmussens, Olsens, and Randy Wirts. The hogs looked great! I have looked at Olsens sale pigs, if you have questions give me a call. I will be working the sale tomorrow.
The Moore Power Yorkshire boar at Chuck and Bens needs used guys. He is the most interesting York boar I have seen since I started working for the NSR. Plus, there cross bred boar called Boost is doing a great job. If you have questions on herd boars give me call.
The past couple of weeks have been extremely busy, I have been attending sales in Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. Plus, trying to get herd visits scheduled and look at online sale pigs. It has been an exciting spring so far, all most all the sales I have attended have increased their averages from a year ago, and we are not quit halfway thru the sales season. If you follow the online sales you know that they have been crazy as well.
I saw a great set of pigs at Rodibaugh’s this week. If you are in the market for mid January thru first of February showpigs, I would encourage you to stop by the farm or attend their upcoming sale. The pigs looked outstanding and this firm has the reputation of producing winners.
There is also a great set of hogs being offer on http://www.nsr-buyerschoiceauction.com/. If you have not taken the time [ … ]
The Grimm – Stewart – Schminke Sale that was scheduled for Sunday, April 15, at the Tippe Beef Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been canceled. Stewart’s Duroc Farm will be offering their consignments during a Buyer’s Choice Auction sale scheduled for April 16.
Schminke’s Genetics will also be having an online sale on April 15. Visit their website here or contact Al at schminkegenetic@southslope.net for more information.
I had great couple of days touring Shipley Swine Genetics and Top Cut Genetics this week. Give me a call if you would like to discuss the boars at either stud.
I will be attending several sales this weekend, Kilmer/HiPoint and Hoosier Elite on Saturday and Midwest Best Sale on Sunday. Best of luck to everyone this weekend.
Steel Curtain (Yak II x Badger x Code Express)
Visit to Dennis & Jacob Eve operation at Scottsburg, Indiana, on Tuesday, March 6. Jacob showed me a good Duroc litter sired by Texas Stud (the popular WinTex boar at Shipleys) and also a couple of litters sired by the Yorkshire boar (Buffalo x Tuff) they purchased from the Ellis’s at the Indiana State Fair. They have a good litter of Chesters that are sired by Parnell at SGI and a Vista Brook gilt… a real consistent litter here, give Jacob a call about these as there are several gilts in this litter that need to get out… However, the highlight of the stop was Steel Curtain, the Duroc boar that Eve’s and Paul Graf purchased from Pepple Genetics, Pennsylvania, last fall. This Yak II x Badger x Code Express son has great rib shape, bone, foot size and flexibility.. Sorry for [ … ]
Visit to Peters Hampshires and Showpigs at Columbus, Indiana, on Tuesday, March 6. Delbert & Trevor have invested in many top end Hampshire gilts over the past years to develop a solid program. Their sow herd runs deep in quality and it shows in this pig crop… They partnered up with Shaffers’ Gold Rush last summer and purchased Capital Investment, the STC Grand Champion Hampshire Boar. He has sired a good set of pigs for them. Feature litters sired by Capital Investment are the 55 litter (12/2/11) out of the 2011 WPX Champion Gilt (4 Real x Unreal); litter 56 (12/5/11) out of a The Real Deal x King Kong Sow; 5 litter (1/3/12) out of Soda Pop x Dark Intentions sow; 12 litter (1/4/12) out of the 2009 STC Champion gilt(Sun Tea x All Sport); the 16 litter (1/7/12)out of a Lug Nut sow and the 22 litter (1/22/12) [ … ]
I am in California this weekend working Ottenwalter Showpigs sale. My number is listed in wrong on Mark’s web site. 765-427-3733.
It seems like the spring sale season is off to a crazy start. It has been wild so far and we are only a week into a long season. I wish you all the best of luck finding your next potential champions. This week’s travels started in Iowa with a snowy Monday spent on the phone and preparing for a meeting in Colorado with a group from the Colorado State Fair. The meeting was very positive and I should be able to tell you all more in about a month.
After a day in airports and meetings I made my way to Illinois for a stop at Bobell Farms. Ben has a Hill Billy Bone son headed to Southwest Type Conference that is simply outstanding. This guy is HEAVY structured, big footed, and sound. He has an ideal set to his hip and hock and can really flex and go. He [ … ]
Bloodline 8-3
I really enjoyed my visit with the Mauro family in Pueblo, Colorado on the way home from the National Western. Nick, Kyle and Zach showed me a great set of hogs that they have assembled. I think they are bringing a really nice set of hogs to Belton for the Southwest Type Conference in March.
Bloodline 8-3 is a young herd boar that they have raised that is going to do great things for them. He is a Big Mac on a Spark Plug x Dakota female. His best littermate sister will be in Belton!!!!!!!!!!!
This hog has incredible bone and squareness and is really sound with lots of muscle and power. I think you are going to here lots of good things out of this guy.
Be sure and inquire about the excellent set of York and Duroc hogs these guys are bringing to Belton. I don’t think you will [ … ]
The NSR Field Representative log hundreds of hours of windshield time ever year. This gives me a lot of time to think about topics that we need to talk about, but do not necessarily have time to discuss at shows or events. As we approach spring sale season we all need to make sure that we know and understand the breed eligibility requirements to show at an NSR/NJSA event.
One of the toughest parts of my job is trying to explain to an exhibitor why they can not show there hog due to an breed eligibility problem. Breeders, we can fix this problem, double check all the gilts that you will be selling to junior members for underlines, extra dew claws, and make sure that hamp gilts have a complete belt and they do not have to much white on there noise. Do your best to make this a positive [ … ]
